When we think of Swift we always think of iOS and macOS development, but the truth is that Swift can be used way beyond that. In this talk I will take a small script written Swift and rewrite it into a Swift Package monorepo including multiple products which show how Swift shines across different environments while also explaining which features make it a better alternative to other more commonly used languages. We will build a cross-platform executable (Ubuntu, macOS and Windows), a rest API using AWS lambdas, an online playground using Vapor and Plot and an executable which can be run from a vanilla Javascript site using WebAssembly. And the best thing is that to achieve all of this we’ll write only Swift under a single Swift Package which will allow us to reuse the core logic of the application and run it under a set of different environments and conditions. The project I will talk about is completely open source, so the attendees will have the chance to copy any code examples and see how the Package is all set up too.

On iOS, some enticing features or vital bug fixes seem out of reach because they are locked away behind private APIs. But are they really unreachable? In this talk, we will explore several live demos that demonstrate how to carefully and safely use private APIs for fun and profit.

With the rise of SwiftUI and State-driven programming, many new architectures rose to popularity, but one of the most popular over the past few years has definitely been The Composable Architecture (TCA).

TCA aims to make building apps and features consistent, predictable and natural by providing a single way to mutate state in your apps (similarly to architectures like Redux and Flux). Bundle this with with a set of unique tools to control dependencies and parent-child relationships between features and modules, and an airtight emphasis on testability, and you’ve got what might be an incredible choice for a modern app!

With all of these tools and constructs, getting your first steps can get quite overwhelming and even scary! Worry not, this is where this talk comes into play! I’ll share with you my personal journey of starting to learn TCA from zero, and how to take your first steps.

Modularization is a powerful technique for organizing and managing complex iOS apps. By breaking an app into smaller, independent modules, developers can improve code maintainability, reduce development time, and make testing and debugging their code easier.
However, implementing navigation in a modularized iOS app can be challenging, as it requires coordinating multiple modules and managing dependencies between them.
This talk will discuss best practices and techniques for implementing navigation in modularized iOS apps.
We will explore real-world examples of navigation in modularized iOS apps and discuss how to design your app’s architecture to make navigation easier.
By the end of this talk, you’ll totally grasp the fundamentals of navigation and the different techniques you can use to push its capabilities to the fullest extent.

Building iOS apps that can function effectively when offline or in low-connectivity environments allows apps to provide a seamless experience to users even when they are not connected to the internet. There are several techniques that can be used to build iOS apps that can function effectively when offline, including the following:

-Storing and synchronizing data
-Handling network errors
-Optimizing performance

This talk will cover the StoreKit updates Apple has made. We’ll touch on how Swift Concurrency has made our lives easier when working with StoreKit and how the API has improved massively. We’ll talk about how we can use these new APIs to build a tip jar & things to look out for during submission

In this talk I will discuss different aspects of being a manager versus an individual contributor. I will discuss common misconceptions, explore some personal opinions about hands-on management, and share some real life examples with the goal of clarifying the options to help you navigate your career path and make the decision easier for you when the opportunity arises.

The talk is a story of how the UK Government’s Pandemic response was developed with iOS apps aiding much of the tracking of test subjects and samples at a huge number of sites distributed in far flung corners of the country. Starting with PCR testing, we developed a proof of concept in a single weekend, managing to increase check-in times at the sites from 3 minutes to 30 seconds while reducing error rates from 2% down to 0.02%. As we sped up the sites, we created bottlenecks at the labs. We created apps which would track samples and boxes so that they could more easily manage their capacity. This increased the number of results returned within 24 hours from 14% to 74%.

I will talk through how we set ourselves up for success by automating our builds, unit tests and more from day one. This allowed us to safely expand up to deploying a suite of seven apps onto 12,000 centrally managed devices every week. During this expansion, we accrued a lot of technical debt. I will also cover what we did to ensure our codebase remained flexible to change, gradually improving our architecture to pay down debt including by using Swift Packages.

Specifically, we’ll look at how you can take advantage of sample code, optimise your learning during WWDC, and how you can leverage the community to do a lot of the hard work for you.

What if you could use your front-end favourite language – Swift – to build your backend resources, such as API, or any type of cloud-based processing? And what if I add you don’t even need to deploy a virtual machine to do so? All serverless. During this session, you will learn WHY and HOW you can deploy your Swift code on AWS Lambda.

Typography is an important aspect of design that can greatly impact the overall aesthetic of an app. Inconsistencies in typography can be distracting and make the app feel disjointed.

Typography includes things like font choices, font sizes, line spacing, and line spacing. By creating a system, it is easier for you to keep the typography in sync with the app’s overall design and keep the designers happy!

This talk is about how creating a typography system makes updating fonts easier, with changes propagating throughout the app without affecting the codebase and a smoother design process.

GitHub Copilot launched in 2021 and uses GPT3, the same model as fabulous ChatGPT, and it can code in over 60 programming languages, including Swift. Let’s dive into its capabilities, find its limits, and try to answer the question if AI will take over our jobs.

A lot of magic happens in Swift to make our life easier, but magic is a fickle thing – in one place it lifts your code up, in another it can bring it crashing down. We will take a look at code samples that should work differently or not work at all, but actually have a well defined behavior.
